More beaches and waterfalls

I was disappointed yesterday with the scenery pictures…the thing about this part of Iceland is that everything is SO big… That is hard to portray in pictures. So I woke up this morning and told Max, “Taking pictures of this scenery is like taking pictures of chocolate cake. At best all it can do is evoke a memory”. So I was just going to photograph little things…but then it was such an outrageous day I tried again.

In the morning we backtracked some to Skogar. On the way stopped for these pictures —

And manage to stop right near a puffin nest. Look for the orange beak thats what makes them famous .

We went to Skogar to see the waterfalls (foss in Icelandic). Every little area has one of these maps

Walking to the top of the waterfall took us up about 18 flights of these stairs. Check out the careful construction.

And then we hiked past 3 more waterfalls. As you can see it is so peaceful. But both Max and I felt a spiritual touch from the area. It was so powerful to have water melting from a glacier just cascading to the sea. Said something to my soul about the ability of life to heal and cleanse.

Oh–to get onto the trail we had to go over a fence. They have these double sized ladders everywhere.

Then we went the museum at the other end of town. A man realized in the 70’s that the small farm was disappearing and went to all his friends and got there old stuff before they threw it away. Just an amazing foresight. We saw these houses that they have moved there and preserved.

Which probably is what made me notice this up a hill on our way to the beach.

Most of these were a house on one side and the barn on the other.

The following pictures were from a National Preserve that the guidebooks said was closed due to nesting season. Luckily Max is good with U-turns and willing to ride down any road.
