We drove out to the end of the fjord (I just love the sound of that)
And in memory of Mom, and all the pictures of our relatives with their feet in the Pacific Ocean– here I am on the Artic Ocean!!
We explored more of Akureyi. This church was designed by the same architect, Guðjón Samúelsson, as the one in Rejkavik. One of the things about having a country with a population less then most cities is there are only have so many really talented people. I like both churches. This was built in 1940.
They added on church offices and Sunday school rooms, but I couldn’t find any information about who did the design or when. The entrance is from the church parking lot, then you go down into the building. You can see from the last few pictures that it is entirely covered in turf…harking back to the turf farms.
Akureyi is on a hill, so there were a lot of paths. Here are a couple
Something I keep meaning to say. The sun never really gets all the way overhead. This is a cute house, but look at the shadow. I took this at noon. The sun is like our winter sun.
So people build there houses with these porches totally oriented to the ??South?? Anyhow where ever the sun is.
A city statue–no plaque, no date, but made in bronze.
Oh. So all the stores around here sell hand-knitted Icelandic sweaters. They are VERY expensive and too warm for California …but the funny thing is everyone here wears them. Cool teen-age girls and boys, men, moms, strange trolls in front of tourist shops..(rarely children I think they are too expensive for that)
..
Here’s one for Matt–they are really good about marking the workers wear bright colors…too..and Mike
Tomorrow is our longest driving day… Going to Stykkisholmur on Snaefellness Peninsula.
