Saqqara–the Old Kingdom

so Our last day in Egypt and we drove out past the Pyramids to the capital of the Old Kingdom (2000 BC) –Memphis and then went to Sakaara–which was their buriel ground.

Ramses II had to put up a statue in Memphis…along with almost everywhere else. This one fell down and so Egypt just built a museum around it.

There was a smaller, but more beautiful sphinx there as well. And just a little statue that is a little different then what we have seen before.

We were driving through rural areas..the Nile extended itself far from its banks by a series of canals.

Then we went to Sakaara which is where they buried their dead.  It was perfect to see at the end of the trip–most of the Temples in Luxor were New Kingdom…which is 2000 years AFTER what we saw in Sakaara…and yet not terribly diffferent.  You can see why it is considered one civilization.   The hieroglyphics were similar—though Tarek said not as complex…and they used more pictorial symbols then spelling out words, but they did spell some words.   The art is similar as well.

The difference was we were seeing tombs…and so people wanted their daily life represented whereas in the temples they are showing offerings to the gods, mostly.

This is one of the first Pyrimiddscn2519and they sort of laugh at this pyramid..but I feel like it lasted 4000 years..so maybe we should give it a little more respect

Amazing.  Love Barb
