Lilacs and a castle

Spring comes a little later to Pacific Grove then Pleasanton, and the lilacs had just started to bloom when we left.I love lilacs. They are my third favorite flower. Well Lithuania must be on the same schedule as PG. oWe drove today out to where there is a Medieval castle which was built in an island in a lake. It was fairly rundown– this picture was painted of it around 1920

And the the Soviets came to town. They started work in 1939, stopped for a coupe of years when Germany took control of Lithuania but restarted right after they regained control. This is the castle now.

Isn’t that amazing…finished in the 1970’s. The hard part for me, is the whole time the Soviets were spending all this money giving Lithuania back some of its heritage the were killing 60000 freedom fighters. The active resistance here lasted until 1965. Yesterday we toured a heartbreaking facility where people were held and then killed.

Here are more pictures of this lovely castle.

And the one of the more perfect restaurant interiors. It’s called Kitchen. GREAT food too.

isn’t it just perfect?

We love sharing this with you.. Driving to Riga tomorrow. Love maxandbarb

Brilliant juxtaposition of painting of castle ruins with the restoration as it is today. Clever way to show the transformation, Barb.
